Meet Dr. Sam

Dr. Sam McCown is a physician, engineer, businessman, husband, and father who has dedicated his life to serving others.

Born and raised in South Carolina, Sam learned the value of hard work and humility from his parents. His father ran a small business and volunteered for the local election commission; his mother was a quiet, constant presence of generosity and faith. As a young boy, Sam faced a life-altering tragedy when his sister Fran died suddenly due to an unexpected illness. The care that could have saved her wasn’t available, because the hospital’s ICU was delayed in opening because of government red tape. That heartbreaking moment of family-tragedy fueled a lifetime of service, a deep distrust of bureaucracy, and a calling to medicine.

Sam went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Administrative Economics from Clemson University, before attending medical school, completing a radiology residency, and a nuclear medicine fellowship all at MUSC in Charleston. As a physician Sam served as medical director and managed practice finances. In practice, he was heavily involved in women’s health, diagnosing and helping treat breast cancer patients for many years. After retiring from medicine, he continued investing in South Carolina businesses and mentoring youth in financial literacy and leadership.

He and his wife Heather, also a physician, live in Charleston and have four children. They’ve been active in their church for over 25 years and are proud supporters of Scouting. Sam and his three sons are all Eagle Scouts, and his daughter is in medical school at MUSC following in her parents’ footsteps.

Now, Sam is running for Congress to fight for the same American Dream he was able to achieve—one rooted in faith, family, freedom, and fiscal responsibility.
